Yes, they are essentially. However, Crossover will come with extra
utilities to setup your fake windows environment, install all kind of
programs, create menu entries for them etc. For the average user it will
indeed be a smoother "experience". That does not necessarily mean that
applications will run any better, though.

(but many times they will if they have already been tested by the
Crossover people)
