Login and password problem - newbie (Linz)

Hi,
A friend is installing Warty for the first time>   We have finished the
initial install and have rebooted.
Ubuntu has requested a login (not on GUI) of which he put his own login
name and password and it is rejected.
No screen came up earlier requesting a default login and password and
there are no other users.

We have a short period to fix this before he leaves the district.  How
can we resolve this quickly PLEASE.
