Japanese Input - spoke too soon!

OK, I've tried adding LC_CTYPE=ja_JP.UTF-8 to /etc/environment and also
.gnomerc, both have the required effect in OpenOffice but now some of my
applications display in Japanese. Perhaps I need a method that only
changes the setting for OpenOffice and doesn't effect my other
applications. I must admit I don't fully understand your method below,
in what file does that command need to be, or do I run it in a terminal?
Thanks for your help,
Nick
