shift and keyboard

When I press the <Shift> key, the next key I press often doesn't print
a character.  I will have to hit the key twice to get it to print. 
I'm running Hoary Latest and this started happening after a sync about
a week ago.

It's very annoying.  Does anyone have any Ideas as to what could be
causing this?  I don't recall explicitly changing any settings.
