I have the same trouble with my Sony Clie. But I think your way can't
work, because Ubuntu uses udev+hotplug. The device is created by them "on
the fly" when you press the hotsync button.

Have you written a howto?

Does gnome-pilot work with the "on the fly" creation of ttyUSB*?
