VMware WinXP and security

I am in the process of setting up VMware (under Ubuntu) to run Windoze XP 
for those few programs i need as a graphic designer. I am curious as to 
WinXp's security using it this way. For instance, would i still need AV, 
anti-spyware progs, and the like for it to be safe? Or does running WinXP 
through VMware under Ubuntu alleviate these security threats.
