Connection time out error

I am using Ubuntu <warty warthog> and unfortunately, I am not able to update it,
now. Whenever I run apt-get to update & download the packages, apt-get stops
after some time giving me a "connection time out error". Not only that the
entire connection seems to be disconnected after some time. To my surprise, when
I try to logout of my internet connection, my dialer reports a successful
logout. When I reconnect, I am able to continue downloading with apt-get;
however, the problem surfaces after some time.
  I have tried disabling IPv6 as Firefox was waiting for a long time before
opening any page. The status bar was indicating "resolving <...>". Even after
disabling IPv6, there is no change.
  I changed the files at "/etc/modutils/aliases" & "/etc/modprobe.d/aliases" to
make sure IPv6 module is not getting loaded. However, none of this is solving my
problem.
  I am actually running Debian SID, Ubuntu & Windows XP. With Windows I am not
getting any problem at all. Only with Linux, (in both the distros) I am facing
this problem.
  Is there anything I am overlooking?

  BTW, I am behind a static-NAT. (Don't know if that info helps to resolve the
problem)
