GDM not starting after fresh Warty install

Hi,
I recently needed to do a new fresh install of 4.10 after the
dist-upgrade to Hoary was disasterous (sound problems and general
ugliness). Unfortunately, the new install didn't go so well and I was
stuck in console mode for a while. I can now successfully do "startx"
into gnome, and gdm and all of the gnome packages seem to be
installed, but on bootup gdm doesn't automatically start.
I checked /etc/init.d and there's no file for gdm. Should there be
one? Also, I noticed that the init level didn't automatically change
to 5, it was kept to 2. I manually changed it in /etc/inittab.
One more thing, I never noticed before, but is Ubuntu's X system
XFree86 or Xorg? I ask because I assumed it was Xorg, but all the
files I see point to XFree86.
Thanks in advance.
