Yes, it replaces esd. The problem you are experiencing is because
polypaudio is not reading its settings.
Try to run those commands. Go to System:Preference:Multimedia System
Selector. Check the output sink is ESD. Press the test button. It
should work. If it does, Rhytmbox and Totem, for example, should work
too.
