check in /var/log for the log files; and Ubuntu will automatically
keep them for a while on your system. For example:

$ ls -l /var/log/messages*
-rw-r-----    1 root     adm        264362 2005-02-19 08:12 /var/log/messages
-rw-r-----    1 root     adm       3027798 2005-02-15 06:20 /var/log/messages.0
-rw-r-----    1 root     adm         68060 2004-12-28 06:16
/var/log/messages.1.gz
-rw-r-----    1 root     adm        103549 2004-12-02 06:19
/var/log/messages.2.gz
-rw-r-----    1 root     adm        102440 2004-11-01 06:13
/var/log/messages.3.gz
