Well I am back, in more was then one. I have an interesting
development on this issue. I was looking at LXF61 (Linux Format) and
noticed a reader tip about the Xine codecs. He talks about possibly
having to edit ~/ .xine/config to get the codecs' working. I tried
sudo gedit <path> and gedit reported no such file to open. I didn't
save a file or anything, but after that, command shortcuts suddenly
appeared in the window that pops-up after you press the "add
proprietary plugins" button in totem-xine prefs. I didn't do anything
else, I swear 8-) Issuing a sudo totem command (with a VCD in my
CD/DVD drive labeled /cdrom1 and the damn thing started playing the
VCD!!!. Issuing a totem command without sudo still brings up the same
dialog complaining about

"Totem could not play 'file:///media/sdg4/ffastun.ffo'.
The specified movie could not be found."

DVDs still refuse to work as well.

Cheers,

Brian
