No icons on my GNOME desktop

I'm running Warty.  Most things work fine, but I don't have any icons 
on my GNOME desktop.

In the configuration editor I have verified that:
apps/nautilus/desktop/computer_icon_visible is set
apps/nautilus/desktop/home_icon_visible is set
apps/nautilus/desktop/trash_icon_visible is set
apps/nautilus/desktop/volumes_visible is set

However, the *_icon_name settings all have <no value>.  Do I have to 
set them as well?  To what in that case?
