Ubuntu's performance : how to speed up ?

Boy, I really don't fancy going this route. Having to slit my data over
several discs. I would need at least 3 of them, times two in order to
rotate them. Then they would have to be rewriteable of course. That wold
cost fortune, not to mention the hassle of splitting the data, and
spending hours every eveningto backup everything !
Then of course I would have to buy a DVD burner.
Highly impractical and expensive -> not for me ! ;o)
Whereas with my original idea, all the data is backup automatically at
night, when I don't use the machine. It all goes on a cheap hard drive,
no need for a DVD burner, and no need to wait 2 hours to burn : I just
go to sleep and 'cron' will do everything for me.
I just need an old central unit, should cost me under 80 dollars, then
put a decent drive in it and that's it, connect it to the main mahcine
via Ethernet, and I am ready to go, all automatic ! :o)
