what to do when X install fails?

I just did a warty install, and X was never installed. There were no
warnings or error messages, it just didn't install any of the X stuff.
I got the server with apt-get and tried configuring it. The default
settings failed due to a framebuffer issue in the mga driver. Commenting
out UseFBDev got it to work.
I'm wondering now if 1) there's any way to fix this during the install,
and 2) if there's any easy way to grab all of the rest of the X stuff
that wasn't installed (e.g. gnome-terminal, metacity, etc.). I don't
want to go through package by package figuring out what is missing.
