Ubuntu's performance : how to speed up ?

Wow, it's 4 times the price of a "normal" drive, if I ever spend that
amount of money on a disk, I may just as well go for a SCSI one ! :-/
And it's SATA, don't like SATA (too young), and my motherboard doesn't
have SATA controllers, it's 3 year old already (boy does time travel
faster than light ! :-/ )
