there are bugs filed on https://bugzilla.ubuntu.com/
about the cd burner,
and ubuntu is currently just waiting for upstream solutions.
if you want a comprehensive cd burning app,
open menu desktop:administration:synaptic
activate settings:repositories:universe, and install k3b.

great attitude concerning computer problems :-)
you can also right-click on the home folder (when you are in
the home folder /home) and choose "create archive".
this way your backup will be smaller and will more likely fit on a cd.
first you place your archive in home, then you drag it to cd burner.
