| Do you have acpid and acpi-support installed?
yes.

| What happens when you press your sleep key? Does an entry appear in
| /var/log/acpid?
no. nothing.

| When I press Fn+F4 on my Thinkpad I see
On my TravelMate it's Fn+Esc

|
| received event "ibm/hotkey HKEY 00000080 00001004"
|
| /etc/acpi/events/ibm-sleepbtn recognizes this key and tells acpid to run
| /etc/acpi/sleep.sh.
all right. so this is how it is supposed to work. thank you for the
explanation.

| If you see an entry in /var/log/acpid, but nothing happens, then you
| might need to add a config file in /etc/acpi/events.
no. I don't see the entry in /var/log/acpid. can this key be configured
to be recognized by acpid?

| What sort of laptop do you have?
It's an Acer TravelMate 4050.

| If you do not get an ACPI event in /var/log/acpid, but see an actual X
| keycode (e.g. with xev), then forget about /etc/acpi/events. However I
| am not sure what is the right way to configure sleep in this case.
| (I would start up gconf-editor, and edit
/apps/metacity/keybinding_commands
| and /apps/metacity/global_keybindings to map the Sleep key to the sleep
| script, but I am sure this is not the Right Way.)
yes, I see the keycode with xev. it's 223. I tryed to map it with the
keybindings_commands, but this does'nt work either (but this is probably
a different issue).

|
|
| My understanding is that it should just work out of the box without the
| need to configure anything manually.
that would be nice :)
