Mostly everything set up

I've got Ubuntu all installed with an intact /home from Libranet and
have DLed most everything I normally use /but/ can't seem to set the
root password.  I am no fan of sudo, thinking that it is an added
insecurity, and  would like to just have and use my root password as
necessary.  Did I miss something in the install?  Besides, now webmin
won't allow me in. Help, Humans!  Must I re-install?
