Lost my Desktop preferences !

A weird one, the kind of things one would expect from Hoary, but, I am
running Warty !

Problem : go figure why, everytime I reboot the machine and log-in, when
the dektop loads, the wallpaper is reset to the Ubuntu defaults, and the
system sounds are reset to. That is, I hear all teh "event sounds",
despite I turned them off before. I keep restoringf everything by
hand, but everytime I restart the machine, my custom settigns are gone
again !

All I can remember doing before that happened, is installing "qcad" from
Synaptic. But I have removed it since.
That reminds me of K3B, which would keep the desktop from loading at
all, because it somehow change the permissions on some file in my home
folder. Could it be something similar here again ?
What file is responsible for storing walpaper and evet sounds settings ?

Thanks much in advance.

Vince, annoyed..
