Strange slow down of my system

Thanks for the reply. I killed famd and now everything is working fine
again. However I don't see samba in the process list. Could it be so
because it relies on famd and now that I've killed famd it's been
killed also?

Sorry for my miswording. I meant can I start/stop a daemon graphically
in Ubuntu? Samba is running as a daemon in the background.
