This is an old myth that really needs to be finished off.

RPM is a package format, similar to debian's DEB or Slack's TGZ.  Once 
upon a time, RedHat and other RPM based distros didn't have package 
managers, but now they do.   Heck, last time I used Fedora Core, I was 
using 'apt-get' on it to resolve RPM dependencies, and it worked as 
well as it does on debian based distros.

I think the 2 most important things in choosing a distro are:
1) Hardware support for what you own
2) Support network.  Having a knowledgeable friend to help you is a 
bonus.  After that it's online resources...
