Getting degree sign in Ubuntu

The only way I know of is through the character map,  make sure that on
the left side under the Script column "Common" is selected and it
should be there.  If instead of "Script" it has a column that says
"Unicode Block", go to "View" and select "By Script"  then find Common.
Unfortunately I don't know of any keyboard shortcuts to type the
character though.
