Problems with shutdown

The only options related to ACPI or APM in the BIOS are:
ACPI [Enabled/Disabled]
PM control by APM [Yes/No]

Initially it was ACPI on, PM control by APM Yes. I turned ACPI off ->
same problem, I then turned PM control by APM off -> same problem

Any other ideas?
