usb and /dev/sda help, please....

Hello everyone-
I have recently installed Ubuntu on a couple of machines and am really
enjoying it.  I'm having some problems with one of them, I wonder if
anyone could help:
A word or two about the situation:
There are two usb ports on the motherboard, both of which work (at
least individually).  There is a HP psc2175 with a memory card slot
plugged into one of the usb ports.  This works great, in either port,
when plugged in by itself.  When a memory card is inserted, it is
automatically mounted and everything.  Here is the output of
/var/log/messages when it is plugged in:

Looks good, works good, and we even have a /dev/sda
But when an ipod is plugged into the other port, it disconnects the
printer, and fails to read the ipod.  Here is the output from
/var/log/messages:

Then, if I remove the ipod the printer is remounted:

Now, if I unplug the printer from the usb, and then plug in JUST the
ipod, here is the message:

But there is still no /dev/sd* and no way to access the ipod (that I know of).
That's about all that I can think of for troubleshooting information.
Oh yeah, I plugged the ipod into the usb port of a laptop running the
same warty, and it was automatically mounted.
If anyone has any tips, I would love to hear them and would appreciate them...
