I was just thinking the same thing.
Sort of.
Depending on the spec of the PC and the software that is already
installed on the windows box, A Mac Mini with a KVM switch to share a
monitor and keyboard with the existing machine could make a lot of
sense. The Mac Mini comes with the basic but capable iMovie included.
All very nice and simple and not too pricey. Just don't forget to add
extra RAM. It will also do pretty much anything else a comparably priced
PC box will do. Actually more.
Your friend can then run unbuntu on his PC. Best of both worlds.
Its the most simple solution, but its not free. (as in beer, or speech).
I have been an OS X user for years and I really think that apple has the
video thing down the best. Still, I am committed to Linux for a
multitude of reasons (mostly political) and I have to say that video
(actually, most multimedia) on Linux is do-able, just not painless. Yet.
