For linux you have in order of fanciness:

Kino (free)
Mainactor ( $)
Cinelerra (free)

Cinelerra's really powerful, but you need a serious 'puter and a lot
of time to figure it out. Kino and Mainactor are learnable in a couple
hours.

Your buddy might be well served to keep windows around for video
editing, but upgrade his ram to make his box run more smoothly. ;)
