'xhost +' does not work in warty

Sure it does, just not by default. Your local X server is started with
the option
-nolisten tcp, as stated in an earlier post. Reconfigure your X server
to run without this, and you xhost+ method does work. I think you can
reconfigure it
with gdmsetup or by editing /etc/gdm/gdm.conf.
