screen resolution stuck at 640x480 in Hoary

If it helps, I have the same symptoms (cannot get screen res. above
640x480) on a Shuttle AK31A34EE MainBoard/Athlon XP 1.7GHz CPU/ nVIDIA
GeForce MX 420 / Hitachi 2098-MU - Hardware setup. For what it's worth,
my SONY VAIO PCG-F540K laptop also exhibits the exact same behavior . .
. . . .go figure!
