Is Debian testing working successfully, i.e. are these pcmcia errors
from Mandrake or Debian? If Debian testing is working for you, it's
very likely Ubuntu will too.

If not, then try the Live CD for Hoary (the next version of Ubuntu in
development) . The live CD and installer CD for Hoary uses the same
install software, so I'd try downloading the live CD at

http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/hoary/array-4/ 

if that works without errors, wait about a month (Hoary release is in
April) and install that one.
