On my system 0 makes the fan go to max, after that no settings have any
effect...

Yeah, I've done that, but I discovered a new problem when I couldn't log
in: /var/log/syslog is spammed with lines like those below about a bit
under 200 times a second (slightly less with reniced kacpid), which
fills upp the disk after a while:

Feb 7 09:06:24 localhost kernel: ACPI-1138: *** Error: Method
execution failed [\_SB_.C045.C058.C08E] (Node c18e0740), AE_AML_NO_OPERAND
Feb 7 09:06:24 localhost kernel: ACPI-1138: *** Error: Method
execution failed [\_GPE._L11] (Node c18eb6a0), AE_AML_NO_OPERAND
Feb 7 09:06:24 localhost kernel: ACPI-0552: *** Error:
AE_AML_NO_OPERAND while evaluating method [_L11] for GPE[ 0]

googling on these indicates that it's an issue in recent 2.6.10 and -11
kernels, but I'm no kernel expert.
