I haven't tried Ubuntu on it, but I did install Debian on an even-older
Presario 1070 and I never could get any pcmcia cards to be recognized. 
It only has 32 MB of RAM and a 1 GB hard drive, so it's not too useful
anyway.  I tried re-installing Windows on it and it said that the A20
interrupt is missing (or something similar).  I've also had problems
with Compaq desktops in the past (my first PC was a 1985 DeskPro and it
had numerous problems with the contacts on the ISA slots and power
supply cable).  Their bioses have always seemed a bit weird, but Compaq 
isn't alone in that.
