I have the same issues

Im using Vmware 4.5.2 Newest Version and Ubunut 4.10 Stock kernel.

I can install Vmware fine and one problem i have is that i will not see
my cdrom drive therefore I have to boot off of iso images.

I have tried Xp PRo and as soon as the boot loader finishes loading all
of its drivers and what not I get a Blue Screen of death everytime. I
havent tried win2k yet.

Now im currently trying to install Win98SE.  I was able to partition
and format my drive space fine.  The install also went fine but now it
seems as if its hanging at the hardware dection state.  Its started of
with 16 minutes left at the hardware detection stage and now it just
dropped to 15mins after waiting for about 25 minutes of no activity. 
Ill give it a few hours before I abort the Install.

Id appreciate any feedback from anyone who has been able to get windows
installed using vmware in ubuntu.  Please list your versions and what
not.
