We don't support 2.4 kernels any more in Hoary, and we need the 2.6
kernel to do sane unified hardware detection using hotplug. A floppy
install would produce quite different results otherwise, which would be
bad.

The only way I can see what you suggest working is some kind of
two-kernel monte; I have to say I'm not very comfortable doing this kind
of hack in the installer ...
