Newbie trying to copy/burn first audio CD.

Could this problem have anything to do with the fact that I have 2
ATAPI CD-R, RW, DVD-R disks? How do I get ATAPI drives to work in
Ubuntu? BTW, when I try as stated in the Starter Guide to create an
ISO:

dd if=/dev/cdrom of=file.iso bs=1024

I get:

dd: reading `/dev/cdrom': Input/output error
0+0 records in
0+0 records out
0 bytes transferred in 0.010225 seconds (0 bytes/sec)
