openoffice.org: Choosing 'Open' from Writer menu causes crash error and application hangs

Just for the records, it's bug #5020 in ubuntu bugzilla. It seems to
be releated to runing firestarter (and maybe other firewall software
as well).

A workaround is to turn on the option:
Tools->Options->Openoffice.org->General->[x] Use Openoffice.org dialogs

(as Chris pointed out in the discussion about this bug).
