Hoary : hangs at boot :-(

I have tried both the install CD Array 3, and the Live CD 3.5
Both hags at boot, when trying to synchronize the clock to
ntp.ubuntulinux.org :o(
I tried the live CD on a friends computer, who has the same ISP, modem
and everything as me, and it works fine on his computer.
On mine, I tried the recovery mode, so that I could disable that step
(like I did for Warty), but alas, no luck, even in recovery mode tries
to synch the clock to the Ubuntu server, so it hangs too ! :o(
I tried disabling /etc/rcS.d/S51ntpdate , by renaming it, like I did
with Warty ages ago, but that doesn't work, it still hangs :o(
If it can't connect to the time server for whatever reason, why does it
hang, instead of just saying "Failed to connnect ...." like Wart
does ? :o(
Please help...
Vince
