Can't install Warty - error configuring kernel

While installing Warty onto a P4 system, I get this:

An error was returned while trying to install the kernel into the
target system. Kernel package: 'linux-386'.

The information in console 3 is:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
linux-386: Depends: linux-image-386 but it is not installable
Depends: linux-restricted-modules-386 but it is not going to be installed.

What the heck is going on here? There's nothing exotic in this system
- a P4 on an Intel motherboard and an nvidia GeForce 440MX AGP card,
and some D-Link NICs. The Warty LiveCD booted and ran fine, and I've
installed other distros without a problem.
