ad 2)
I suppose you are using the Win Box as a gateway for you DSL
connection?! In that case you have to tell Ubuntu the IP of the Gateway
Computer:
Computer -> System Configuration -> Networking
Open the "Properties" of your Ethernet Device
Configuration: Manually
IP Adress: <whatever you need for your network>
Subnetmask: <whatever you need for your network>
Gateway address: <IP of your Win Box>
In order to find the Gateway address look at the output of "ipconfig" as
Dave suggested (Default Gateway it's called).
ad 3)
Ubuntu will only find your DSL connection if you are using DHCP, as all
the IPs you usually have to configure manually (see above) are
configured automatically. This implies of cause that you have a DHCP
server running on your Windows PC.
