I mean I commented out (# on first column) the lines:
Load "GLcore"
Load "glx"
Load "int10"
in the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
> Do you have your screen running at native resolution? (1280 X 800, right?)
Yes
> Do you have 3D acceleration with the fglrx driver?
NO. I have no 3D acceleration (The package description says it provides
hardware OpenGL; maybe I was too conservative unloading also glx, but
the ATI driver continued to refuse to load, so when I found a
combination that worked, I stopped trying).

Well, as Filipe Bonjour has suggested, it's far better to use the
packages from the Ubuntu repositories: they can be installed with no
harm with Synaptic (simply check that "restricted" is included in the
repository list).
I installed:
fglrx-control
and
xorg-driver-fglrx
then
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
(remember to choose fglrx as driver, then select resolution 1280x800 and
unselect the default ones)
then commented out in the xorg.conf just generated the lines indicated above
