how to copy graphics from PDF to a file

There are a number of pdf manipulation tools available in the
repositories that I came across the other day while solving a
different pdf-related problem.  I seem to remember one of them being
able to extract images from pdfs.  It might be useful for what you're
doing.  I'll check when I get home, and post what I find.
