shortcuts for panel applets

Dear Friends
I am a novice user of linux who just wanted to learn linux through use.
I have upgraded my computer to Breezy (5.10) from 5.04 and started gettting
following  problem.
   System freezes without any reason
   I could not run Synaptic, Users-admin, disks-admin, Networks-admin etc
   program from Root terminal.
   My PC is PIV 2.6 Ghz, 512 mb ram but system si slow.

please help me
