Ubuntu 5.10 minumum requirements

The Live-CD is going to try to run everything in supporting the desktop and there is very likely some hardware issues with your sister's system, been there, seen that. A Celeron 500 and 128 mb of ram is sufficient and will run Ubuntu quite well given compatible hardware. There are other Live-CD distro's that might be more compatible with your sister's hardware. Another approache and it would require installation, but you could install a base "server" type install to the hard drive and then using apt-get to add a desktop and applications but I suspect this is more than you want to bite into.
