synaptic manager not working

I just did a fresh install of Xubuntu-desktop and synaptic and in my 
case terminal worked great & xfce4 worked fine, UNTIL I started 
synaptic, then it was an immeadiate and HARD lockup.  I don't know what 
has changed in the last week or two ( I had suspicious reports from 
chkrootkit so I had to wipe and reinstall ) but something is definetly 
not working right!

I realize I'm using an older box but I can't continue to fight to get 
ubuntu working reliably as a server.  As far as my server goes, it is 
now running Engarde 3.0.2 reliably like always.  Engarde has NEVER given 
me the problems Ubuntu-server does.  I hope someone takes note.
