desktop disaster - x crashed

I just logged out (see previous post about "terminal not starting"), but
instead of going to the login screen as expected, I've lost x-windows
completely.

When I do Alt/F7 the following is on the screen:

modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting apm
(/lib/modules/2.6.10-5-386/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/apm.ko): No such device

modprobe: FATAL: Error inserting apm
(/lib/modules/2.6.10-5-386/kernel/arch/i386/kernel/apm.ko): No such device

There was probably other stuff but it had scrolled past so I couldn't read
it.

This is the first time I've logged out since upgrading from hoary to
breezy. So far I haven't even tried to re-boot, because at least I have a
terminal running right now.

Any suggestions? PLEASE :)

David.
