where is /dev/inotify

Dear all,
I want to experiment a little with directory monitoring with inotify. For
those interested, read here:
http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/linux/library/l-inotify.html
I am looking for /dev/inotify. I downloaded the sources for 'linux-source'
according to the instructions here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelHowto
And I copied over the old config from /boot to /usr/src/linux. Now when I
make menuconfig, Inotify is already enabled, so why bother compiling, right?
Now where is the /dev/inotify? I understand it does not automatically get
created all the time. So I follow the instructions, and it tells me to run
dmesg | grep notify
and it also doesn't give me anything.
Where is inotify?
This happens both on breezy as well as dapper.
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Henk Postma
