Samba is harder than it needs to be and the config can be tricky, but
it almost certainly isn't necessary to do something as drastic as
compile it yourself to get over a permissions issue. Can you be more
specific about the problems your encountering with mounting shares as
ordinary users? In /etc/samba/smb.conf, are you using share or user
mode? Have you created samba accounts with smbpasswd? I'm betting you
can get over this problem with the version in the repositories.
