Sorry, my original post wasn't clear. I've used VNC both too and from
Ubuntu machines and between Ubuntu and Windows 98 machines. I've not
used x11vnc, but the Vino package and Applications->Internet->Terminal
Server Client.

System->Preferences->Remote Desktop doesn't have any way of choosing a
VNC server, it just configures the default server (which I believe is
Vino) to allow a remote viewer to access it. I've usually set both the
Sharing buttons so that the remote user can view and control the
desktop. The command vncviewer localhost.localdomain:0 doesn't work
unless some DNS magic that I don't have is in place - I need to address
the computer fully with an IP address (or resolvable hostname from
DynDNS for example).

The Security section gave me some trouble under Hoary, I'd suggest
starting with both 'Ask you for confirmation' and 'Require the user to
enter this password' set, with a short easy password. Under Breezy I do
now seem to be able to work without these set. It seems safest to leave
them both on though.
