Thank you very much for your comment: that's what happens when you are
awake since more than 20 hours: when I looked in Ubuntu repositories I
didn't search for fglrx but for a driver named ati-something... and
later on I found on ATI site the proprietary driver (named fglrx), but
only on RPM format.
Loading xorg-driver-fglrx (and doing once more "dpkg-reconfigure
xserver-xorg") made the trick!
To make it load I had to unload the following extensions:
GLcore, glx and int10
