First lines of dmesg

There are two reasons I can think of you might see this:

1) dmesg is printing a lot of messages, and the first is scrolling off
the screen. Scroll the terminal window up to see the first message. If
you can not scroll up far enough, then as others have suggested, try
piping the output to head or less.

2) The kernel buffer wrapped around because there were so many messages.
The kernel only holds so many messages in its ring buffer and once
that wraps around, the first messages will no longer be available with
dmesg. They should have been logged though, so you should be able to
find them in /var/log/kern.log.
