Things I already hate about Kubuntu (new user)

Technically speaking, you're not using -Ubuntu-, you're using
-*K*ubuntu-.  Three (or four?) of your seven issues (5,6,7, and maybe
even 4) look to be KDE specific.  Maybe you should try Ubuntu (the
default Gnome version) itself.  Another issue (1) was because you chose
to try expert mode (an ordinary user wouldn't).  Still another issue (2)
is not {U,Ku,Edu,Xu}buntu-specific at all (give me physical access to
most any computer and I can mess with it).  As for issue 3, that sounds
like a good area where improvement might be made.  Maybe a little app
that makes the process convenient would be a nice thing to add to the
distro.  I don't know, maybe there's one out there you can install for
now...?
